The Environmental Stewardship Program put in place by Les amis de la montagne in 2007 was built upon the following principals: profound knowledge of Mount Royal's ecosystem; 25 years of experience coordinating the activities of volunteers and involving the general population; and establishing long-term partnerships with the Ville de Montréal and the great institutional properties on the mountain. But first and foremost, the ESP responds to a need, that of Montrealers' desire to become involved in the protection of the environment by taking concrete measures to ensure the future of the planet by taking action locally.

Planned activities for 2012 are:

  • Tree planting: The goal for 2012 is to plant a total of 2,000 trees and shrubs and involve 1,400 volunteers in our actions
  • Monitoring of the growth and survival of planted trees
  • Removal of Common Buckthorn, an alien invasive plant
  • The research project on the control of Buckthorn and Norway Maple

All proposed activities are supervised by professionals and are in line with a scientific, research-based process aimed at increasing knowledge of the natural environment and intervention methods for its conservation.
