MONT ROYAL ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM
Expand your knowledge of conservation issues while participating in activities aimed at maintaining Mont Royal’s biodiversity.

Thirty-or-so amateur ornithologists volunteer their morning to continue the bird inventory begun in May 2006 on the Mont Royal territory.

GUIDED WALK: FROM THE MOUNTAIN TO THE RIVER

This astonishing trail follows the streams that descend the mountain to the river. Join Les amis de la montagne to retrace the historic, geographic and cultural links between Mont Royal and the Saint-Lawrence River.

GUIDED WALK: HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE OF THE ROYAL VICTORIA HOSPITAL

Les amis de la montagne’s public forum takes to the streets to explore the site of the Royal Victoria Hospital. Presented by Bruce Allan, MOAQ, MOAA, FIRAC, Associé principal, Le Groupe Arcop, participants will discover the history of the hospital and the heritage to be found on this site.

LECTURE: RUE PEEL: WITNESS TO THE CREATION OF THE “SQUARE MILE” IN THE EARLY DAYS OF MONT-ROYAL PARK

Partner: 2012 – Montréal, ville d’histoire
Joanne Burgess, history professor and director of the Institut du patrimoine at UQAM presents an exploration of the Rue Peel and its inhabitants around 1880, in a time where the Square Mile was the most prestigious bourgeois neighbourhood in Canada. The conference will be followed by a guided walk by Les amis de la montagne to observe the evolution of the city through its changing landscape, viewed from the Kondiaronk lookout.

LECTURE: THE ANCIENT LANDSCAPES OF MONT ROYAL: AN ARCHEOLOGICAL VISIT OF THE MOUNTAIN
Tuesday, May 29
In French from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and in English from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Presented by Valérie Janssen and Theresa Gabos, Master’s students in archeology at the Université de Montréal. This lecture plunges you into the heart of the mountain’s history as you discover Mont Royal’s role in the life of Montrealers through its ancient landscapes from De Maisonneuve’s planting of the cross to the 20th Century.

LECTURE: THE SPRINGTIME ARRIVAL OF BIRDS ON mont Royal

Partner: Les Belles Soirées de l’Université de Montréal
Presented by André Cyr, PhD, retired professor of ecology and ornithology at the Université de Sherbrooke. Discover the migratory habits, behaviours and songs of a variety of birds, complemented by the lecturers’ photographs and birdsong imitations.

GUIDED WALK: BIRD OBSERVATION ON MONT ROYAL

7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

The return of springtime is ideal for bird-watching on Mont Royal, a stopping point for migratory birds. More than 180 species frequent the mountain during this time of year. Discover some of these bird species in the company of an ornithologist from Les amis de la montagne. Bring your binoculars!

Art and music

“LA MONTAGNE EN IMAGES” PHOTO CONTEST – 2012 edition
To showcase the rich and varied heritage of Mont Royal through photography, Les amis de la montagne announce the launch of their 3nd annual photo contest, “La montagne en images”, presented by the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. The contest themes this year are: animals of Mont Royal; landscapes and viewpoints; water in all its forms; together on the mountain; works of art and buildings; and the youth viewpoint, a new category open to those 18 years and under, choice of theme. The winning photographs will be on exhibit at Maison Smith as of October 2012 and showcased on Les amis de la montagne’s website. Click here for contest rules and registration.

EXHIBIT OF CHILDREN’S DRAWINGS: THE FOREST AND ITS INHABITANTS THROUGH THE CHANGING SEASONS
Saturday to Monday, May 19 to 21

This exhibit features drawings of Mont Royal’s flora and fauna created by 20 elementary school classes, participants of the La forêt, ses habitants, au rythme des saisons project held from October 2011 to May 2012. This project is part of the Une école montréalaise pour tous program of the Ministère de l’Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec, in partnership with Les amis de la montagne and the SPVM.

SUNDAY MUSIC ON THE TERRACE
Sunday, May 20
1 to 3 p.m.

Relax and enjoy the savoury menu of the Café des Amis at Maison Smith, while listening to the melodies of violinists Sarah Boucher and Gabriella Rozankovic of the Duo du Conservatoire.

Guided walk: The hidden treasures of the Université de Montréal campus: the richness of its woods, urban agriculture and apiculture
Friday, May 11 from 1 to 6 p.m.

As part of the 24 heures de science, the Université de Montréal invites the public to visit the woods on its campus featuring the exceptional view from its position on the Canadian Shield. A kiosk located in front of the main tower will provide information on the institutions’ history. 30-minute guided walks will explore the natural treasures of the northwestern flank of Mont Royal, the geological artefacts representing its history, the location of ancient streams and the varied anthropogenic developments of the site. A visit of the university’s urban agriculture project, including the observation of rooftop beehives, will conclude this walk.
Location: Kiosk in front of the Pavillon Roger-Gaudry Tower, 2900 Chemin de la Tour, Université de Montréal. Free.
